AP10 Terrible Range and Throughput

I just added a AP10 to my home user setup and the performance is terrible, I was expecting to see a range bump over the consumer grade netgear router I had running as a access point. The signal strength is actually worse than what I had, I am getting like 50% from about 15 ft away with clear sight. Doing FTP transfers are really slow and even web browsing lags. Is there a way to change signal power in these? What are others seeing for performance? Maybe I just have a dud??
