Hey guys.
I encountered a realy weird problem yesterday that took me until today to find a possible source that caused it.
Gonna be a bit of Text, I just want to bring as much information i thought it could be part of my problem.
I upgraded my ESXi5 HW from a HP Core2Duo Workstation with 4gb ram, broadcom NIC onboard and Intel PCI-E NIC plugged in PCI-E 1x slot, 2x160gb sata hdd (ASG got 1 Core and 2gb) to a system containing the following components:
Asus m5A99X Evo
AMD FX-8150
16gb Ram
IBM 1015 (LSI) Sas controller with flashed LSI-IT bios passed through to nexentastor, not seen by ESX
Intel PCI-E NIC (taken from the old system)
2x 160gb sata hdd (taken from old system)
8x 2tb sata hdd connected to the sas controller
So 1st I installed the ASG 9.00 beta. Worked fine so far. Vmtools working. Settings backup from old ASG system restored.
Continued setting up my Debian System, that manges dhcp, ftp, webserver and so on for me. (of course disabled ASG - Dhcp server afterwards)
So running those 2 machines 1 wanted to start install of nexentastore that later should manage the storage for more VMs an other share folders for family a.s.o
So i downloaded the nexenta iso 3.1.3 from thier site
Thats where it started. The download freezed/stopped at about 40% of the 600mb file. No error message, no connection reset, nothing (Browser: firefox)
Pausing, resuming worked to finish loading the file. Did md5 check. File hash correct. Reading further i recognized that theres a vmware image to download. so i started downloading that one (1,4gb). Again freezed, so I began to wonder, maybe the server? The browser? Again paused, resumed a few times -> finished. Didn't have a md5 hash, but winrar said -> corrupt archive. Then i started to check possibled errors.
Tried Internet Explorer, freezed; tried wget on linux box, freezed, but autodisconncted and retried; tried download manager downthemall, freezed.
Tried firefox on brothers pc, freezed.
So software issue rather not possible, am I right?
Later that night found another file freezing on download (fixed to 72/73%). That one doesn't even finish with pause and resume. It's the Guildwars2 Installer .exe that encountered the error.
So planned to check ASG possible issues today. By now ive spent 4hours searching for a possible solution.
Changed Nics from e1000 to VMXNET3 and back. Checked all possible combinations between internal NIC and WAN-NIC.
Also switched physical network cards in use by changing vNICS and switching network cable.
Tried ASG with 32 and 64 bit. Without backup setting restore. Did update to 9.00 before restoring backup, tried different backups.
Found out: When routing the connection through Web-protection proxy, download works without problems, as ASG loads the file and presents it to the machine behind. But that doesn't apply to 1,4 gb files.
Then while searching the weg stumbled upon that post on asg forums
Someone there asked if IPS is off or on.
My ASG has it on, so i just did a blind shot and switched it off.
Download passed the magical barriar 73% and finished without problems, so did with the nexenta vm image and iso.
So now my question to those ISP/network-/web-protection specialists out there. How can that happen and how shall i fix that?
Thanks for reading ;)
